Women in the Olympics
The Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate’, as the games were dedicated to Zeus men were the only ones to participate. If the women chose to ignore the rules they were to suffer the severe punishment of death by being pushed off a cliff. The virgin Women were originally the prizes in men’s Ancient Olympic chariot races.
During the first ‘modern’ Olympics in 1896 no woman competed as ‘De Coubertin Fet’ thought that their participation would be ‘impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic and incorrect.’
